DIRC.info is a special-purpose search engine for finding high quality recipes, cocktails and cooking websites that are not cluttered with irrelevent ads
Traditional search engines work by running your query through an 'index' of every webpage on the internet, then returning the results
This worked great in 1999 when the internet was much smaller. The problem is, the web today is enormous and much of it is actually junk
We believe that searching through the entire world wide web (billions of pages) for a simple pizza dough recipe is rather inefficient. You wouldn't search an entire library for books on the American Civil War, you would simply look around the history section
DIRC is a searchable directory, currated by humans, of websites that contain recipes, cocktails and cooking instructions. Only high quality websites are indexed. SEO garbage, AI slop or anything with pop-up ads, is left out.
I'm Max and I created DIRC.info because I think we can create better ways to organize information on the world wide web. Lately I've been fed up with the ensh*ttification of everything and recipe websites are some of the worst examples. I'm sure you all know what I mean. Nothing slows a browser down like a pop up video advertisement for multivitamins. I cook a lot, so I search for recipes online often and I think the current state of the recipe web is horrid.
DIRC is a hobby project created by myself. It aims to be both a useful resource and a proof of concept for alternative search engines. It is built on open source software, mainly Linux, Postgresql and PHP.
